International Day of Older Persons - October 1st, 2024
October 1st marks the International Day of Older Persons, celebrated annually to raise awareness about the challenges faced by the elderly worldwide. The theme for 2024, “Ageing with Dignity: The Importance of Strengthening Care and Support Systems for Older Persons Worldwide”, emphasizes the need for comprehensive support systems to ensure that older persons can live with dignity and enjoy their human rights. As aging is a universal experience, this issue holds significance for everyone.
In Myanmar, the ongoing military coup has led to widespread human rights violations, with the entire population facing daily hardships. Elderly individuals, in particular, have been severely affected by the increasing number of internally displaced persons. The destruction caused by natural disasters, combined with military operations such as village burnings, has made relocation nearly impossible. Many older people have tragically lost their lives in fires, targeted airstrikes, and indiscriminate artillery attacks on civilians.
The Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management of the National Unity Government recognizes the elderly as a vital part of the people’s revolution. The Ministry is committed to safeguarding the lives and security of internally displaced persons, especially older individuals affected by conflict. In line with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Ministry is addressing their essential needs, including food, clothing, shelter, and social welfare.
To commemorate the 2024 International Day of Older Persons, the Ministry provided food, medical supplies, and donations to the elderly, including those displaced by conflict and their families, as well as recent flood victims. This initiative underscores our commitment to ensuring that older persons are cared for and valued as an integral part of our society.
