Humanitarian Assistance for Internally Displaced People (IDPs) in Karen State
The ongoing military offensives by the junta have forced more than 23,000 villagers in Karen State to flee their homes, leaving behind their livelihoods and communities. These civilians, including women, children, and the elderly, have been subjected to relentless airstrikes, forcing them to seek refuge in makeshift camps and remote areas with little to no access to basic necessities.
In response to this dire situation, the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management of the National Unity Government (NUG) has coordinated with the Karen Peace Support Network (KPSN) to provide much-needed humanitarian aid to the displaced population. Recognizing the urgent needs of these internally displaced persons (IDPs), the Ministry delivered essential relief supplies, including food, blankets, and rain-resistant tarpaulins, with a total value of 50 million kyats.
These relief efforts aim to alleviate the immediate suffering of the IDPs, providing them with basic nutrition and shelter as they endure harsh weather conditions and the constant threat of further attacks. The distribution of rain-resistant tarpaulins is especially critical, as it offers a temporary shield from the elements for families who have been forced to live in open areas or makeshift shelters.
The NUG, in close collaboration with KPSN, is working tirelessly to ensure that the displaced communities in Karen State receive the support they need during this extremely challenging time. Beyond providing material aid, the Ministry is also coordinating efforts to improve access to medical care, safe drinking water, and psychological support for the traumatized villagers.
While these efforts provide temporary relief, the scale of the displacement and the ongoing violence underscores the urgent need for international attention and assistance. The NUG continues to call on global humanitarian organizations and the international community to support their efforts to provide sustained aid and protection to all displaced people across Myanmar.
As the situation in Karen State remains volatile, the Ministry reaffirms its commitment to standing by the affected civilians, working alongside local organizations like KPSN to ensure that no one is left behind. The ongoing conflict has created one of the most severe humanitarian crises in the country’s recent history, and the NUG is determined to continue mobilizing resources and partnerships to bring immediate relief and long-term solutions to the displaced populations in Karen State and beyond.
